Hints of Harrison the journalist but mostly a chance to hear Harrison nerding out with many other people about something they all love - this was wonderful. It was great to read your experiences on a more personal level for a change, you should consider doing it again.
Unfortunately, you can take the boy out of journalism, but not journalism out of the boy.
The big difference here is just the levels of research. Not much for this one. More time spent thinking about how to word things. I can’t help my nature striking up convos.
I may repeat this for GamesCom. But it’s 5 days in total (including GamesCom Dev…). Will likely have to omit more.
I started playing FFXIV... this year! I'm an old FF / Square Enix fan but I always had a personal rule to keep away from MMOs because I know how time-consuming they can be, and how addictive it could become for a gamer like me. And I wasn't wrong. I was hooked straight away and I'm spending way too many hours in Eorzea.
I'm still in A Realm Reborn because I'm a completionist and I'm doing all the bloody sidequests and leveling up all the bloody jobs. Apparently ARR is not great compared to the rest, can't wait to progress through the main story.
Anyroad (a word I learnt in the game), I've been sometimes wondering how successful the game still is, and I think your article is the best answer. Entire festivals dedicated to a single game, it's mental. But if it's been around for ten+ years and part of the players' lives for that long, I can understand. I'm only a few months in and can't put the controller down. And an online game where you can build a community can become much more than just a game. I'm sure you've seen the "Life of Ibelin" doco. Strongly recommend it if you haven't.
It really can. And this event kind galvanised it for me. And you are correct. It picks up around Heavensward, and gets stronger and stronger towards Endwalker.
Stop doing sidequests. Like actually, stop. They are not like other FF games, and will drive you nuts!! Only do the ones with the blue in the market, they generally lead to adding something new to the game.
But yeah, I haven't looked at Life Of Ibelin, I'll check it out!
I have no interest in FF or FFXIV but I still read to the end. I really enjoyed this diary-style of article and your photos were really great, I've never been to any sort of con/fan event so it's awesome to get a look on the inside and I'm glad you had such a great time as well!
I had no idea there was so much instability behind the scenes, my 2 MMO's of choice are The Old Republic and Elder Scrolls Online so compared to those I've always seen FFXIV as this undefeatable behemoth.
Thank you! I knew it was long, and worked hard to weave in hooks and points of interest with each and every section.
I'll go into this more on Friday. It's stable in that the game itself is very successful. And its difficult to track officially, as few verifiable numbers are released.
But the broader picture of Square Enix is interesting.
It was really engaging and I felt you took us along for the whole ride. There were moments where I thought "This sounds like my worst nightmare." And others were I thought "I'd love to see more of this with other IP."
Mate, biggest compliment you could pay. That's the whole goal of colour writing, bringing the readers along for the ride.
I tried to really paint the whole event. Some of the presentations were like sitting through lectures. The gigs were awesome. The people, incredible. I was happy to be there, but don't like gushing.

I'll look forward to that one too
