This is a tough one. I think the trick is to decide what you get out of it. Where's the real value? If you're just playing for fun and it stops being fun, why keep playing? If you're playing for the thrill of accomplishment, are you willing to double down and focus? When you chase a thrill without purpose, you'll burn out.
Playing generally relaxes me. For a writer, I actually don't read all that much -- except on holiday. May day job involves a lot of reading.
Which is why I found playing this game so confounding! It should be relaxing, but its putting me on edge. So now I chunk it, booting it up every so often and its a lot more enjoyable!
Same here. I'm a fan of J-RPGs and after beating two or three in a row, my motivation definitely drops, especially as they're usually quite long and I'm a completionist. I agree it's all about diversity, and juggling deep and tough games with lighter and more relaxing ones.
Another element is that the offer in good games has become huge IMO and I'm finding myself wanting to beat as many as I can to play as many as I can. And in the process being a little impatient to finish games vs enjoying the fun and full experience and emotional journey. Probably participating to my personal "fatigue".
I'm very much the same with JRPGs. I have given into the fact that I'll never hit 100% in my first run. I usually wait a year, play them again, and then get 100% because I don't feel the rush to beat them to see how the story ends?
Last example I can think of where I did this was Persona 5.
Great write up! Im loving Wu kong but Im also currently hit a wall with the wind sage boss, its quite a b*tch! But im def not giving up as I miss the challenge of a souls game, and I can also see the fatigue if its’s your 3rd souls game in several months. These games are punishing and I cant see myself playing them in a row without something more relaxing and familiar in between.
It's bloody tough. And from what my mate who is further tells me, its gets harder.
The third btw was Another Crab's Treasure: An indie soulslike. Very good game too! Played stuff in-between, but it didn't help how I felt! I think I just need a break from the genre.
